India’s Arctic Ambitions: From Observer to Active Player
Recently, a Parliamentary committee in its report titled “India’s Role and Presence in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions” has recommended a Polar Ambassador and fuller Arctic Council membership for stronger Indian engagement.
What has the Committee Recommended?
- Polar Ambassador: India should appoint a senior official dedicated to Arctic and Antarctic affairs.
- Full-fledged Membership: India should seek greater participation in the Arctic Council.
- Polar Research Vessel: India should develop a dedicated vessel for scientific research across the Arctic Ocean.
- Higher Funding: The committee highlighted the need for greater financial support for Arctic activities.
