Earthquake-Prone Areas in India

  • According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), from 1st January 1960 to 31st March 2023, a total of 675 earthquakes with epicentres in the Delhi-NCR region were recorded over 63 years.
  • Of these, only 73 earthquakes were recorded in the first 40 years until 2000, while 602 earthquakes occurred in the 22 years following.
  • In 2020 alone, the Delhi and surrounding areas experienced 51 tremors.
  • Around 54% of India’s total land area is classified as earthquake-prone.
