The Growing Challenge of Diabetes in India

  • According to a study published in The Lancet Medical Journal, India has the highest number of uncontrolled diabetes patients.
  • As per this study, in 2022, around 828 million (82 crore) adults globally were found to have diabetes, of which one-fourth — i.e., 212 million — were in India.
  • Between 1990 and 2022, the global prevalence of diabetes almost doubled among both men (from 6.8% to 14.3%) and women (from 6.9% to 13.9%)
  • In high-income countries such as Japan, Canada, France, Spain, and Denmark, there has been no increase — in fact, a slight decrease — in diabetes prevalence over the last three decades.
