Climate Change and Elections

  • According to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) report, extreme weather events have affected 94 elections in 52 countries over the last two decades.
  • Tropical storms and floods have accounted for the highest share (67%) of natural hazards disrupting elections.
  • Earthquakes and wildfires contributed 7% each to the hazards affecting electoral processes, while the share of heatwaves was 9%.
  • Between 2006 and 2025, at least 26 elections and referendums were fully or partially delayed due to natural disasters.
  • In 2024 alone, 23 elections in 18 countries were affected by natural disasters such as storms, heatwaves, and floods.
