Kannadippaya Receives GI Tag Recognition

On 4th April 2025, Kannadippaya, a traditional tribal handicraft from Kerala, was accorded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

  • It becomes the first tribal handicraft from Kerala to achieve this recognition.

What is Kannadippaya?

Kannadippaya translates to mirror mat.

  • It is a handwoven product made from the soft inner layers of reed bamboo.
  • The unique reflective pattern of the mat distinguishes it from other handicrafts.

Origin

  • It is crafted by tribal communities across Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Palakkad districts in Kerala.

Craftsmanship and Materials

The primary artisans of kannadippaya are from the Oorali, Mannan, Muthuva, Malayan, Kadar, Ulladan, Malayarayan, and Hill Pulaya communities.
