Jagadguru Basaveshwara

On 20th April 2026, the Prime Minister paid homage to Jagadguru Basaveshwara on the occasion of Basava Jayanthi.

About Basaveshwara

  • Basaveshwara was born in Bagevadi (of the undivided Bijapur district in Karnataka) in 1131 AD.
  • He served as Karanika (Accountant) & later as Prime Minister in the court of Kalachuri king Bijjala at Kalyana.
  • He is known as the founder of Lingayatism.
  • The term 'Lingayat' denotes a person who wears a personal linga, an iconic form of God Shiva, on the body which is received during the initiation ceremony.
