Charaideo Maidams: Pyramids of Assam

On 24th January, 2023, the Centre has decided to nominate Assam’s Charaideo Maidams for the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About Charaideo Maidams

  • The Charaideo moidams are royal burial sites of the Ahom dynasty, which ruled over much of Assam and the North East from 1228 to 1826 AD.
  • Located around 30 km from Sivasagar town in eastern Assam, they are considered equivalent of the ancient Egyptian pyramids —
  • After the 18th century, the Ahom rulers adopted the Hindu method of cremation and began entombing the cremated bones and ashes in a Maidam at Charaideo.
