ISRO Successfully Grows Cowpea Seeds in Space
In January 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a major milestone in space science by successfully growing cowpea (lobia) seeds in space. It also operated India’s first space robotic arm.
- Both experiments were part of the PSLV-C60 SpaDeX mission launched on 30th December 2024.
Cowpea Seeds Sprout in Space
- The experiment was conducted under CROPS (Compact Research Module for Orbital Plant Studies) onboard the PSLV-C60 POEM-4 module.
- In just four days, the cowpea seeds successfully sprouted, and leaves were visible the next day.
- ISRO’s goal is to develop methods for growing plants in space to support long-term human missions.
