Recently, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reassured markets regarding the stability and governance of HDFC Bank following the chairman’s exit, highlighting its status as a Domestic Systemically Important Bank (D-SIB) and underscoring the importance of such banks for financial stability.
- Systemically important banks, referred to as Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs) in India, are financial institutions whose failure could severely disrupt the financial system.
- Their large size, wide network, and deep links with other institutions make them critical to the economy. Because of this, they are often referred to as “too big to fail”.
