Kariyachalli Island

  • Tamil Nadu has recently launched an initiative to save the sinking Kariyachalli Island in the Gulf of Mannar, one of India’s most ecologically sensitive marine zones.
  • The conservation is being undertaken through the Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resources (TNSHORE) project.
  • The project aims to restore natural reefs using artificial structures, rehabilitate seagrass beds, and revive marine life.
  • Location: One of the 21 islands in the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, situated between Rameswaram and Thoothukudi.
