Marungur Excavation

Recently, the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) successfully completed a significant excavation at Marungur in Panruti taluk, Cuddalore district, revealing a rare habitation-cum-burial site dating from the Iron Age to the Early Historic Period.

About the Site

  • Location: Between the Thenpennai and Vada Vellar rivers in ancient Naduvil Mandalam.
  • Type of Site: A multidisciplinary excavation uncovering both settlement remains and burial systems — a rare occurrence in Tamil Nadu.

Important Findings

Artefacts (95 items)

  • Tamil-Brahmi potsherds, terracotta ware, microliths, beads, bone tools, conch shells
  • Iron implements, antimony rods, and Chola-period coins

Burial System
