Gyan Bharatam Mission: Preserving India’s Manuscript Heritage through Digitisation
Recently, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture expressed concern over the slow pace of manuscript digitisation under the Gyan Bharatam Mission (GBM), India’s flagship initiative for preserving and digitally disseminating its manuscript heritage.
Current Status
- Only around 7.5 lakh manuscripts have been digitised so far.
- An interim target has been set to digitise 20 lakh manuscripts by 31 March 2027.
- The slow progress highlights challenges in achieving the Mission’s larger digitisation objective.
