Pithora Painting Awarded GI Tag
On 28th July 2026, Gujarat’s centuries-old Pithora Painting wasofficially granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the GIR under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
What is Pithora Painting?
- Pithora Painting is a traditional tribal wall-art form practised mainly by the Rathwa, Bhil and Bhilala communities.
- It is particularly associated with the tribal regions of Gujarat, especially Panchmahal and Chhota Udaipur.
- The art derives its name from Pithora De, a revered tribal deity associated with marriage, prosperity, fertility and community well-being.
