SC Lays Down 4-Factor Test to Avoid Undue Sympathy in Sentencing
On 17th February 2026, the Supreme Court held that criminal punishment cannot be reduced solely by increasing compensation to victims. The Court cautioned that such an approach may create the impression that offenders can avoid imprisonment by paying money, thereby undermining the deterrent purpose of criminal law.
