Study on Evolution of Kaziranga as Habitat of One-Horned Rhinoceros
In February 2026, researchers from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) published a study tracing the ecological evolution of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park as a key refuge for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros.
- The findings show that Kaziranga’s present landscape has evolved significantly due to climate change, vegetation shifts, invasive species and herbivore activity over thousands of years.
- Fossil evidence indicates that the one-horned rhinoceros was once widely distributed across the Indian subcontinent but gradually declined and became concentrated in Kaziranga.
