Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) Shuts Down

On 3rd October 2025, the global banking industry’s Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) announced it will cease operations immediately, following a wave of departures after US President re-election and weakening climate commitments worldwide.

Background

  • Purpose of NZBA: First convened in April 2021 by the UN Environment Programme finance initiative but led by banks, the NZBA aimed to reduce the carbon footprint of member banks’ investments and drive the transition to net zero emissions by 2050.
