India Elected to UN Human Rights Council

On 14th October 2025, India was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–28 term, marking its seventh tenure on the Geneva-based body. India’s new three-year term will begin on 1st January 2026.

United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC)

  • Establishment: In 2006 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • Purpose: The UNHRC is an intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally, addressing violations, and making recommendations.
  • Membership: Comprises 47 member states, elected by the UN General Assembly for three-year terms with equitable geographic distribution.
    • African States: 13 seats
