China Expands Rare Earth Export Controls to Overseas-Made Items
On 9th October 2025, China tightened its export curbs on rare earth materials, extending restrictions to include items manufactured abroad using Chinese-sourced rare earths. The move adds another layer of control over an industry central to global high-tech and defence sectors.
New Export Rules & Bans
- License Requirement: Overseas exporters using rare earths sourced from China must now obtain an export license from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
- Technology Restrictions: Exports involving rare earth extraction, magnet manufacturing, and recycling technologies will be banned unless specifically permitted by the ministry.
