Background

  • India ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2007.
  • This led to the replacement of the 1995 Act with the more comprehensive Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, which expanded the recognized disabilities from 7 to 21.
