UNEP Launches Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas
On 21st November 2024, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released the Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas, - ‘The State of the World's Peatlands in Maps’ - at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
- This groundbreaking report highlights the importance of peatlands—critical carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots—and the urgent need for their conservation and restoration.

- Global Presence: Peatlands exist in 177 out of 193 UN Member States, covering 3-4% of Earth’s land but storing up to one-third of global soil carbon, twice the amount held by forests.
