Integrated and Scientific River Management in India
On 17th November 2025, the 67th Executive Committee (EC) meeting of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) approved major research projects to strengthen scientific river management in India.
- Scientific River Management refers to the data-driven, ecological, and sustainable approach to managing rivers. In India, this has become essential due to pollution, over-extraction, climate-change impacts, and frequent floods/droughts.
Key Principles of Scientific River Management
River as an Ecological System
- Treats rivers not as channels of water, but as living ecosystems with hydrology, geology, biodiversity, and human interactions.
