Soil Health Impacts of Climate Change & Fertilisers Misuse

In November 2025, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), in a study, revealed that climate change and unbalanced fertiliser use are significantly degrading soil organic carbon (SOC) across India.

  • The study emphasised that organic carbon governs the chemical, physical and biological aspects of soil health, serving as a foundation for fertility.

Major Issues Highlighted

  • Factors Responsible for SOC: Three factors which decide the SOC in the soil irrespective of the crops and cropping patterns are temperature, rainfall and elevation.
  • Correlation between Organic Carbon and Elevation: Soils in hilly regions contain higher organic carbon, whereas lowland soils exhibit depletion.
