Space warfare, encompassing the use of space-based and ground-based assets to conduct and counter military operations, represents a growing security challenge. The increasing militarization and weaponization of space have introduced new threats and strategic considerations for national and international security.
Anti-Satellite (ASAT) Weapons
- ASAT weapons, designed to disable or destroy satellites, pose significant risks to space assets and operations.
- India's Mission Shakti (2019): India conducted a successful ASAT test, destroying a live satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO). This demonstrated India's capability to neutralize space-based threats, but also raised concerns about space debris and the weaponization of space.
