Nicaragua Withdraws from UNESCO
On 4th May 2025, Nicaragua formally withdrew from UNESCO in protest against the organisation awarding the 2025 Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize to La Prensa, a prominent Nicaraguan newspaper critical of the government.
- The Guillermo Cano Prize, established in 1997, honours individuals or institutions that defend or promote freedom of the press, often under risk or repression.

- UNESCO awarded the press freedom prize to La Prensa on the recommendation of an international jury of media professionals.
- The decision triggered strong opposition from the Nicaraguan government, which communicated its formal withdrawal in a letter received by UNESCO.
