UK Transfers Sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius

On 22nd May 2025, the United Kingdom agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ending decades of British control over the Indian Ocean archipelago.

Terms of the Agreement

  • The UK will pay Mauritius approximately £101 million annually to lease back the military base for at least 99 years.
  • The Diego Garcia base, operated by US forces, will continue to function under British and American control.
