Plastic Pollution in Indian Himalayan Region
In May 2025, the Zero Waste Himalaya Alliance along with the Integrated Mountain Initiative released The Himalayan Cleanup (THC) report 2024.
- The report revealed a significant plastic pollution crisis in the Indian Himalayas, with a large portion of the waste being non-recyclable and originating from single-use food and beverage packaging.
Plastic Pollution Scenario
- Main Source of Plastic Pollution: Over 80% of plastic waste in the Himalayas originates from single-use food and beverage packaging.
- Non-Recyclable Waste: 71% of collected plastic is non-recyclable, including multi-layered plastics (MLP), with limited or no market value.
