SC Directs Centre to Prioritise POCSO Courts for Faster Trials

On 12th May 2025, the Supreme Court of India directed the Central Government to expedite the establishment of exclusive POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) courts on a “top priority basis” to effectively deal with rising cases of sexual crimes against children.

Key Concerns Raised by the Supreme Court

Insufficient Number of POCSO Courts

  • There are not enough dedicated POCSO courts in the country, which is leading to delays in completing trials within the time limits given in the law.
  • This delay undermines the timelines mandated under the POCSO Act, which aims to ensure swift justice for victims.
