The Official Secrets Act, 1923: Guarding the Nation by Securing its Secrets

On 16th May 2025, a travel blogger from Haryana was arrested for allegedly engaging in espionage for Pakistani intelligence agencies.

  • She has been charged under Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, as well as Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

What is the Official Secrets Act?

  • The first Indian Official Secrets Act was enacted in 1889 to suppress the voice of nationalist publications, which were opposing the British Government’s policies.
  • It was amended during the time of Lord Curzon in 1904.
