Trachoma

  • On 19th May 2025, India was awarded the Certificate of Elimination of Trachoma as a Public Health Problem by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • India became the 3rd (after Nepal and Myanmar) Southeast Asian region country to have eliminated Trachoma in 2024.
  • Trachoma is a type of conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, a bacterium that is transmitted to healthy eyes by a discharge from an infected eye.
  • This disease occurs when Chlamydia trachomatis is transmitted to eyes via hands, clothes, and towels used by those infected or via flies that land on the eyes or noses of the infected.
