Sickle Cell Disease

World Sickle Cell Day is observed annually on 19th June to raise awareness about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), promote early diagnosis, and improve access to treatment and care globally.

History

  • The day was recognised by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through a resolution adopted on 22 December 2008.
  • The UN identified Sickle Cell Disease as a major public health challenge and one of the world's most significant genetic disorders.
  • Theme 2026: “Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Disease”.
