Buddhist & Jain Architecture
A Stupa is a dome-shaped sacred monument containing relics of the Buddha or other holy objects. In Buddhist architecture, it holds deep religious and symbolic significance. Originating in India before the 5th Century BCE, Stupas evolved from simple burial mounds into sacred Buddhist monuments and centers of worship.
The word "Stupa" is mentioned in the Rigveda (as Astuka), the Atharvaveda, and other texts, referring to structures built on the ground. The Pali word "Thupa" means a cone-shaped heap or shrine containing a relic.
