Centre Notifies Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026
Recently, the Union Home Ministry notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, to modernize the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) framework.
Aim
- To phase out duplicative physical paperwork and create a paperless identity ecosystem.
- To tighten norms surrounding dual citizenship and prevent the misuse of travel documents, especially regarding minors.
- To simplify the registration, renunciation, and cancellation processes through a centralized electronic registry.
Key Features
- Restriction on Dual Passports for Minors: A new provision under Rule 3 states that a minor cannot simultaneously hold an Indian passport and the passport of another country.
- Introduction of e-OCI: Applicants may now receive an electronic Overseas Citizen ....
