India-Italy Relations Enter a New Phase with Special Strategic Partnership

On 20th May 2026, India and Italy elevated bilateral relations to a Special Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Rome to expand cooperation in trade, defence, technology, connectivity, and global governance.

Key Outcomes of the Visit

  • Bilateral trade target set at: 20 billion euros by 2029.
  • Cooperation expanded in sectors such as:
    • Semiconductors
    • Clean technologies
    • Pharmaceuticals
    • Digital infrastructure
    • Critical minerals

Defence and Security Cooperation

  • Defence Industrial Roadmap adopted for: Co-production and co-development.

Space Cooperation

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Italian Space Agency agreed to deepen cooperation in: Earth observation, Heliophysics and Space exploration.
