India-Italy Relations Enter a New Phase with Special Strategic Partnership
On 20th May 2026, India and Italy elevated bilateral relations to a Special Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Rome to expand cooperation in trade, defence, technology, connectivity, and global governance.
Key Outcomes of the Visit
- Bilateral trade target set at: 20 billion euros by 2029.
- Cooperation expanded in sectors such as:
- Semiconductors
- Clean technologies
- Pharmaceuticals
- Digital infrastructure
- Critical minerals
Defence and Security Cooperation
- Defence Industrial Roadmap adopted for: Co-production and co-development.
Space Cooperation
- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Italian Space Agency agreed to deepen cooperation in: Earth observation, Heliophysics and Space exploration.
