Khasi and Garo Granted Official Language Status

  • On 16th April 2026, the Meghalaya Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026, granting Khasi and Garo full official status alongside English.
  • The ordinance repeals the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005, under which English was the sole official language while Khasi and Garo had only associate status.
  • Implementation will be phased, with the government first developing translation systems, recruiting personnel, and building administrative infrastructure.
  • Official notifications, government orders, and communications will eventually be issued in English, Khasi, and Garo.
