Shekha Jheel Declared Ramsar Site
- On 21st April 2026, the Union Government announced that Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh had been designated as a Ramsar site under the Ramsar Convention.
- With this addition, India’s total Ramsar sites have increased to 99.
- Uttar Pradesh now has 12 Ramsar sites, among the highest in the country.
- The designation is expected to boost biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, and water security.
- Shekha Jheel is an important stopover on the Central Asian Flyway for migratory birds.
- The recognition strengthens India’s progress towards reaching 100 Ramsar sites.
