Shekha Jheel Declared Ramsar Site

  • On 21st April 2026, the Union Government announced that Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh had been designated as a Ramsar site under the Ramsar Convention.
  • With this addition, India’s total Ramsar sites have increased to 99.
  • Uttar Pradesh now has 12 Ramsar sites, among the highest in the country.
  • The designation is expected to boost biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, and water security.
