Yana Caves Declared Geo-Heritage Site

  • Recently, the Geological Survey of India declared the Yana Caves in Karnataka as a Geo-Heritage Site of National Importance.
  • The recognition was announced on the occasion of the 176th Foundation Day of GSI.
  • The rock formations at Yana are estimated to be around 2,700 million years old and are composed of Precambrian dolomitic limestone.
  • The caves are located near Gokarna in the Uttara Kannada district within the Western Ghats.
  • The landscape is dominated by two prominent monolithic peaks - Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara.
