Land Inequality in India
On 7th April 2026, the World Inequality Lab released a study titled Land Inequality in India: Nature, History, and Markets.
- The study highlights deepening land inequality in rural India, with a large share of households remaining landless.
- It is based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (2011), covering 650 million individuals across 2.7 lakh villages.
- It uses Gini coefficient (Gini Index) to quantify the degree of land inequality across rural households.
Major Highlights
- High Land Concentration: The top 10% of rural households own 44% of total land.
- The top 5% of rural households own 32% of land, while the top 1% alone control 18% land.
