Maternal Mortality Remains Concentrated in Select Countries: Lancet Study
Recently, a study published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women’s Health highlighted the continued concentration of maternal mortality in a limited number of countries, raising concerns over global progress towards SDG targets.
Major Findings
Concentrated Global Burden
- Nigeria, India, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and Cameroon together account for 36% of global maternal deaths.
Off-Track for SDG Target 3.1
- The SDG Target 3.1 mandates reducing the global maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to fewer than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030.
- The study warns that 104 countries, including India, are currently off track to meet this critical target.
