US Designates Qatar as a Major Non-NATO Ally
On 1st February, 2022, US designated Qatar a major non-NATO ally, a largely symbolic honour to reflect the “importance of its bilateral relationship”, and its status as a “good friend and capable partner”.
- Qatar is the 18th country to receive this designation, the last being Brazil in 2019.
- Qatar becomes the third country from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to receive such a designation.
- Bahrain and Kuwait were so declared by President George W. Bush in 2002 and 2004, respectively.
