Biofuels
Biofuels are renewable fuels derived from biological materials (biomass) such as plants, agricultural waste, and algae. They serve as cleaner alternatives to traditional fossil fuels like petrol and diesel. The technology involves breaking down complex organic matter through biochemical or thermochemical processes to extract energy-rich molecules like ethanol or biodiesel.
How the Technology Works
- Biofuels are classified into four "Generations" based on the feedstock and technology used:
- 1st Generation (1G): Produced from food-based sources (sugar, starch). Sugarcane juice or corn is fermented using yeast to produce ethanol, which is then distilled and dehydrated for use in engines.
