Types of Orbits

An orbit is a regular, repeating path that one object in space takes around another one. An object in an orbit is called a satellite. In practical space operations, orbits are classified mainly by altitude, inclination, and shape (circular/elliptical). India’s mission portfolio uses multiple orbit classes depending on the service required.

Basic Concepts

  • Altitude, meaning the height of a satellite above the Earth, affects its coverage area and observation time. Satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) operate at lower heights and provide detailed, close-range observation, while higher orbits allow wider but less detailed coverage.
  • Inclination is the angle of the satellite’s ....
