Scramjet vs. Ramjet Technology
Ramjet and scramjet are air-breathing propulsion technologies that use a vehicle’s forward motion to compress incoming air (without a compressor), making them relevant to India’s goals of high-speed flight systems and lower-cost space transportation concepts that reduce the need to carry oxidiser.
A ramjet achieves thrust by compressing air through the inlet (ram compression) and burning fuel with subsonic combustion inside the combustor. A scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) is an advanced form that enables supersonic combustion, improving efficiency at hypersonic speeds.
Basic Concept
- Air-breathing engines take oxygen from the atmosphere; they do not carry oxidiser like rockets.
- Ramjets operate efficiently around Mach ....
