New Freshwater Algae Species Discovered in Western Ghats
- Recently, researchers discovered a new species of freshwater algae in Rosemala, Kollam district, Kerala.
- The species, named Sheathia rosemalayensis, was identified through DNA barcoding.
- Sheathia species are extremely rare in India, with only one other species previously reported from the Himalayas.
- The presence of Sheathia rosemalayensis in the southern Western Ghats highlights the region’s unique biodiversity.
