Beryl, Helene, Milton, and John Retired from Hurricane Name Lists

  • Recently, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced the retirement of four hurricane names — Beryl, Helene, and Milton from the Atlantic basin, and John from the eastern Pacific — due to the destruction they caused in 2024.
  • Beryl became the earliest Category-5 hurricane on record, devastating the Caribbean; Helene and Milton caused major damage in the U.S.; John triggered deadly floods in Mexico.
  • A record of five storm names were retired after the 2005 Atlantic season; the deadliest was Mitch (1998), and the costliest include Katrina (2005) and Harvey (2017).
