Lucy Completes Historic Flyby of Asteroid Donaldjohanson
- NASA’s Lucy spacecraft has completed a crucial flyby of asteroid Donaldjohanson, marking a significant milestone in its 12-year mission to explore Jupiter's Trojan asteroids.
- The spacecraft passed within 960 kilometers of the asteroid, conducting a series of complex observations designed to simulate future encounters with the Trojan asteroids.
- Lucy used its Terminal Tracking System to autonomously lock onto the asteroid 30 minutes before closest approach, allowing it to continuously track and gather data despite suspending communication with Earth.
- Data from the flyby will be transmitted back to Earth over several days, providing valuable insights into the asteroid's shape, surface geology, and cratering history, ....
