Aryabhata Turns 50
- On 19th April 1975, India’s first indigenously built satellite, Aryabhata, was launched from the Soviet Union, relaying signals back to Sriharikota within 30 minutes.
- India partnered with the Soviet Interkosmos program amid global political tensions and post-nuclear sanctions, enabling Aryabhata’s launch when domestic SLV capabilities were nascent.
- Aryabhata was built in a humble industrial shed with the support of local industries and institutions like HAL, becoming a symbol of Indian ingenuity and resourcefulness.
- Despite power failure limiting scientific output, Aryabhata successfully validated satellite communication, data transmission, and telemetry—proving India’s capability to design and operate space systems.
