Rare Sighting of Juvenile Colossal Squid in South Atlantic
- On 15th April 2025, a footage was released of a juvenile colossal squid—only a foot long—2,000 feet deep near the South Sandwich Islands.
- Colossal squid are rarely seen alive due to their large, light-sensitive eyes, which make them avoid bright and noisy equipment.
- Compared to the more studied giant squid, first identified in 1857, the colossal squid remains far more elusive. Unlike the giant squid, it has a shorter reach but a much bulkier body—reportedly growing up to 23 feet and 500 kg.
