Three Language Formula

In February 2025, some states opposed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s three-language formula, citing feasibility and implementation concerns.

  • The policy mandates students to learn three languages, with at least two being Indian, while allowing flexibility in language selection.
  • It aims to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity.

Evolution of the Three-Language Formula

  • Article 351 of the Constitution directs the Union to promote the spread of the Hindi language to develop it so that it may serve as a medium of expression for all the elements of the composite culture of India.
  • Kothari Commission (1964-66) proposed the formula, later adopted in the 1968 NEP.
