Draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in January 2025 released the draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025 to implement the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act, 2023).
- The K.S. Puttaswamy judgment (2017) recognized the right to privacy as a fundamental right under Article 21.
- Based on Justice B.N. Srikrishna Committee (2017) recommendations, the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 was introduced but later withdrawn.
Key Provisions of the DPDP Act, 2023
- Regulates digital personal data processing in India and data processed abroad for offering goods or services in India.
