LWE Strategy – “Legacy & Thrust Areas”
- In January 2026, the Union government has reduced the number of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected districts to just seven following a recent review by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- This aligns with the government’s target to eliminate the Naxal menace by March 2026.
Categorisation for Sustained Stability
- The Ministry of Home Affairs introduced "Legacy and Thrust Districts" to prevent the resurgence of extremism.
- "Legacy Districts" are regions no longer extremism-affected but requiring continued security and development support for stability.
- "Thrust Districts" are identified as prospective sites for Maoist expansion necessitating preemptive and proactive state intervention.
